Los Angeles, California
Invited competition, 2010

The project is an adaptive reuse of the original 1962 campus administration building, transformed into a new job placement and data center as part of the large scale campus improvements being made under the Los Angeles Community College bond program. An example of a mid-century modern school building, designed by A.C. Zimmerman & F.D. Howell, the goal of the competition was to renovate the existing building to meet the demands of the new and growing workforce education and training programs at LA Harbor College. The building houses four distinct departments: Job Placement, Fire Technology & Homeland Security, Worksource, and Management Information Systems Department (MIS). In addition, the requirements called for upgrades to all of the building systems, as well as an increase in daylighting and a new façade cladding to meet and exceed current energy requirements, with the end goal of obtaining LEED certification.

Our approach preserves most of the existing shell; where necessary, for cohesion of the master plan and for the outward expression of the program, we treaded lightly with a layered, light and transparent insertion. Some of the key components of our intervention include new glass entries filled with light, a series of light wells that mark the entrance to different departments within the building, enclosure of the atrium, the use of graphics, a passive solar sun screen system, as well as an active photovoltaic system on the roof. This sensitive intervention allows for an understanding of the relationship between the old and new, and becomes a community interface addressing the new internal program.
