Culver City, California
Invited competition, 2011
In association with a developer, we responded to the City’s Redevelopment Agency Request for Proposal for the Parcel B site. Located at the center of Culver City’s thriving downtown business, dining, and entertainment district, Parcel B is the last remaining large un-built parcel in the area. The goal of the competition was to choose a development/architect team to design and build a project that would complete and become an anchor for downtown. During the qualification process, our team was ranked the highest out of four developers shortlisted for this project.
Culver X is a mixed-use commercial project organized as a gathering place and woven into the existing fabric of the downtown community. The project combines two floors of retail, restaurant and entertainment uses with two stories of office space designed to accommodate the creative and entertainment companies that are drawn to the area’s historical prominence in the entertainment and media industries. In his promotion of the city, real estate developer and city founder, Harry Culver enthusiastically pronounced, “All roads lead to Culver City.” He believed its location at the intersection of rail and transit crossings between downtown Los Angeles and Venice was an ideal place to build a city. The Culver-Washington ‘X’ was the historical and symbolic physical center of downtown. Changes over time transformed this historic crossing so that Washington Boulevard no longer crossed directly through Culver for automobiles. Culver X proposes to draw on this iconic intersection to create a new gathering place that complements and extends the existing Downtown Culver City.
